Charlie Parker rides again,
This review is from: The Whisperers (Hardcover)No spoilers included.
Charlie Parker's inherent weakness (if indeed it can be called a weakness) is his desire to do right by the decent people who cross his path, and it is his better nature that again sets off a chain of events that sees the forces of darkness preparing to step out of the shadows. A local man asks Parker to look into the partner of one of his female employees, an ex-military man who the benevolent employer feels is quite simply bad news. But he has an ulterior motive for his request -this man was also an acquaintance of the employers late son, another ex-military man who recently killed himself, and there appears to be something going on with other former members of the same unit. These other men make the fatal mistake of underestimating Parker -they go after him to find out who has hired him to dig into their business, but let him live. As Louis comments, clearly they don't know Parker all that well. I won't say anything else about the plot because it's always more enjoyable to find things out as you go.
The book contains several characters who have appeared in previous Parker novels (most specifically 'The Uninvited' and 'The Black Angel'), and although there is not that much about Parker himself per se within this book (probably because the previous one, 'The Lovers' was an investigation into Parker's origins), there is an accumulating effect as events appear to be building a mythology around Parker (this may be even more apparent to me because I've re-read the entire series in the last month as 'preparation' for this book) -by the end, there is definitely a sense that things may soon come to a head in terms of the forces that having seemingly been tracking and plaguing Parker's life.
Although perhaps lacking some of the humour that the Parker series usually includes (Louis and Angel are present but are not seen all that much), it is still nonetheless a real page turner. I guess now I have to wait for the next one!
