It sounds like Mogwai...minus the inspiration,

On casual listening, there can be no doubting that this is indeed a Mogwai record. Superficially it's little different from any of its predecessors, the same simple melodies gradually building up and then back down. Some tracks with some gentle vocals over the top.
But its just so disappointing. There isn't one track which hits you and makes you marvel at the genius which was so evident on all their previous albums. Even the album's highlight for me - 'Travel is Dangerous' - is just a poorer, watered down version of the excellent 'You Don't Know Jesus' from the band's best album, Rock Action.
Some tracks are astonishingly bland such as the suitably titled 'Auto Rock'. And anyone hearing 'Friend of the Night' for the first time would surely be most astonished to learn that it was the lead single from the album.
I have up to now loved everything Mogwai have done. Rock Action and CODY stand out as two of my all time favourite albums. But this almost sounds like a cheap imitation of the real thing.
I know all this sounds harsh, but I feel its better to bite the bullet and say what I think than try to kid myself that this is on a par with anything previous. What a disappointment.
