This show is...
I missed 24 when it was originally on but decided to take a chance on the box set and see what all the hype was about.
Melodramatic and implausible, this series is stretched to the limit by the fact that SO MANY events happen to SO FEW people in such a SHORT SPACE OF TIME. When neo-classic dramatists talked about the "unities of action" (e.g. a plot taking place within 24 hours), they did anticipate one character could be kidnapped, raped, suffer from amnesia, discover pregnancy, reveal extra-martial affairs, have gun fights and car chases all in ONE DAY!
As stylized as the Direction is, you soon get used (and dare I say bored) to the split screen perspective. Huge holes in terms of plot and character development are thinly disguised with contrived narrative twists. Unlike "The West Wing" (which is a superb example of complicated story lines, detailed characterization and sparkling dialogue), 24 is cliché after cliché.
If secretly you love soap operas but want to see an expensive version (with guns) then this is the show for you. If you want suspense, intrigue and sophisticated acting then steer well clear.
P.S. It is probably more like 3 out of 5 stars but I wanted to offset the other reviews!
