Brilliant, as ever!,
This review is from: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Collection 0.8, Episodes 24-26 [DVD] (DVD)
How many times have I heard people say "Buy it for Episode 24 only" or "The last two episodes were re-done so don't worry!"
Quite a few. So let's begin.
The animation is as beautiful in Episode 24, as it is throughout the entire series. This is, in my opinion, the best episode of the series. I am a die-hard Kaworu fan who bought the movies before the series, but I still enjoyed this Episode, even knowing basically the script! And it very nearly had been in tears. So yes, the DVD is worth the money for this episode alone. That isn't to say the others should be forgotten!
Episodes 25 and 26 are clearly different to the rest of the series, made of small animated sequences and a lot of sketched sequences. Because the director ran out of money. You may find yourself sitting through them and wishing you hadn't, and then going to buy the movie for the "alternate" ending. And that is fine. If you remember this; Rebirth (and onward) is NOT an alternate ending! Although it is true the movies were made almost to make up for the disappointing ending to the series, it was decided that eps 25 & 26 were to be what was going on in Shinji's head, and the movies to be what was actually happening in the real world. So keep that in mind!
There are still some highlights to the final episodes as well! A lot of people enjoy the alternate universe ^_~
