Rigoletto. Kraus,Scotto, Bastianini,

This review is from: Rigoletto (Audio CD)
This is a very interesting recording of this popular opera. The tempi are a little slower than usual in places, which makes for even more poignancy in some areas of the opera.
Both Scotto and Kraus are young, their voices sound young too. Scotto's voice is much lighter than it later became. In fact I don't think I would have recognised "Gilda" as Scotto unless I had known it was her! Kraus is self indulgent here, singing interpolated high notes, but effectively so. He is the libertine Duke after all.
Bastianini is a compelling Rigoletto and sings his role with comfort, pathos and elegance.
Cossotto sings well and is a nice contrast.
Whether you like this or not is a matter of personal taste. It is certainly an enduring testament to two young singers and is an essential recording for Scotto or Kraus fans. There are a few excellent recordings of this opera out there and for my money this is one of them.
