5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid follow-up to Wolf Hall, 10 May 2012
This review is from: Bring Up the Bodies (Hardcover)
The Tudor period has always been a favourite of mine, not least because of the almost ceaseless intrigues that the Tudors and their courtiers, barons and servants indulged in, but I approached Wolf Hall with reticence because it is extremely difficult for any author to find anything new to say about it. And I was hooked from the first page as Mantel took a man, who was never lovely, and turned him into a living, breathing entity whose story held me gripped, even though I knew it's beginning, middle and end. How did she do that? And now she has done it again with Bring Up the Bodies. I couldn't wait to read it, and was richly rewarded as Mantel took Thomas Cromwell through the end days of Anne Boleyn. No need for detail - It's the richness of Mantel's take on the period and the people that delights, keeps you glued to the pages. Only one small grumble: there were moans that in Wolf Hall the author used pronouns too often, rather than Cromwell's name. She has clearly paid some attention to this and avoids it more frequently and I think it's a mistake. The style of Wolf Hall worked perfectly - she should have ignored the criticism because there are occasions when the pronoun would have worked much more smoothly. But it's a very small grumble - this is a book that encompasses the reader completely, so that it is a shock to find yourself in the present day when you finish reading. And yes, I read it in one go! I know it's a cliche, but I really couldn't put it down...
