Electro-horror classic, dodgy remaster,
This review is from: Stella (Audio CD)
Like many CD's produced throughout the 80's, Yello's first clutch of albums have now been "remastered" by banging the master tape through a compressor and a limiter to make the sound more "in-yer-face", like a Sugababes album or whatever. Cheers, guys, just what we needed. Unfortunately there's now a dilemma for the fan: buy this version because of the extra B-side and 12-inch tracks, or stick with the old CD version with its faithful reproduction of Yello's master tape? I'm hoping that record companies will see the light before long and give us the best of both worlds but [in philosophical font] with grainy MP3s taking over the world, I don't see it happening anytime soon. A missed opportunity, 'cos Stella is one of the most terrifying, groovy, danceable, hammer horror albums you're likely to find. The bass on "Stalakdrama" is floor-shaking, whilst "Oh Yeah" sees them putting on the dancing shoes that would pay the rent for the remainder of the 80s. Still a 5-star album.
