I consider this a very useful books not only is a cookery book with great reciepes but full of entertaining facts, how traditions started a very English book. Very good on detail within the recipes basic points mentioned although I cook a lot and know about food and cookery many people don't this is ideal for first time cooks as well as established cooks also advises on wine choices for the meals, plus some crafts and suggested games. I just can't understand the negative reviews, glad I went with my instinct and bought the book. It is not just a cookery book it's more useful than that and inspirational.

Regarding Karen's comment on my review. It is hardly helpful to people. Other people have seen the book and as a result purchased the book. Before I purchased the book and because of the negative reviews I did go and look at the book in a local bookshop, then purchased the book from Amazon. If people have doubts on any book I suggest if possible they do the same. I know some books you can only get from Amazon. Everyone is different and different people look for different things in books especially cookery books. I have over 50 cookery books and do a lot of cooking and entertaining through out the year planning meals to celebrate festivals and cook with foods in season again celebrating the different seasons and this book is ideal for that.

I n understand Karen's comments. For experienced cooks you know the basics and probably do not need to be rd, but there are especially young people who do not have any idea how to cook the simplest of things and if this book for whatever reason encourages more people to cook meals and eat better quality food then it gets my vote. I do a lot of work with young people and from talking to them many cook books put them off as they find instructions complicated. Just because I am an experienced cook it doesn't mean I discount a book just because of what some might see as simple.

I think Karen is missing the point of this book, she seems like a person who likes the last word. Constructive criticism by all means books are a personal taste. If you don't like the book ok. This is a different type of cookery book it's not just cooking, which I think is why some people are disappointed. You have to view this book with a wider expectation than just cooking..
