This review is from: South with "Endurance": Antarctic Photographs (Hardcover)
When you realise quite what Shackleton and his team achieved in failing to reach the South Pole, and when you realise what they went through in returning home without any loss of life, admiration for him and the men is boundless. It is truly the most awesome feat of survival and rescue in history. These were true heroes, and Frank Hurley is most surely a "Prince among men" as Shackleton himself described him. You will see that the photographic quality is superb. You then realise that the photos were taken nearly a century ago. But when you learn that the glass plate negatives survived an 800 mile journey in the roughest seas in the world in a small fishing boat barely able to accommodate 6 men, their quality simply defies belief. This book must be cherished.
