It works IF you have the right situation,
This review is from: Staywell/ Petsafe Infra-Red 4-Way Locking Deluxe Cat Flap, White (Misc.)
We had a standard catflap with no automation and it failed, badly. Two Tomcats used to regularly raid our cat's bowl and then, for good measure, would spray their scent all over the kitchen, hall and living room. They became very adept at doing it, and at avoiding our efforts to repel them. So we had to have some automation.
I read all the reviews on Amazon and felt that none of them worked 100%. Having got this catflap and roadtested it I reckon it all comes down to your situation.
It won't work if your cat likes to sit near the catflap. This will trigger the device and in will come Mr T.
It won't work if your cats lose the collar! You must get the tightness just right.
It won't work if the intruders use the same system and colour of transmitter. You have to check their collars before you buy.
It won't work if the intruder is very strong and determined becuase a really determined and heavy cat can break the mechanism. However, it will be one cat in two hundred that is capable of doing that. Those are good odds.
If you avoid all the above the infrared catflap works great. My two go in and out just whenever they please and no more smelly Mr. T's to contend with. It is expensive, but it has changed our situation, very much for the better.

D. White says:
Alternately, get a Sureflap. It works off a cats microchip. It doesn't activate until a cat passes through it, doesn't need a collar, other cats can't use it, it's very strong. Oh, doesn't eat batteries and break down every few months.

I took a look at the Sureflap only after I bought this. It looks good.
Agree with you that the Staywell eats batteries and, since the review, mine did break down, just as you say. The manufacturer gave me another one free, but it was a major pain in the lower alimentary canal to fit it.
