Perfect Slice of Tropical Escapism,
This review is from: A Salty Piece of Land (Paperback)
I find it a great shame that one of America's most beloved writers of fiction of the past decade or so has largely gone un-noticed in the UK. Pop into your local book-store of wander down the "Best-Seller" Aisle in your super-market and you will find shelf-after-shelf of ridiculously similar works of fiction. Whether it be the latest Dan Brown wannabe or Bridget Jones-style rip-off there's very little to seperate much of what our country is reading right now. How people could do with a slice of Jimmy Buffett in their life !!!
I've never really heard a Jimmy Buffett record let alone owned one but from seeing quite how popular his books have become in the USA & generally fancying the premise of "A Salty Piece of Land" I picked up a copy whilst on vacation and found it to be the most enjoyable novel I've read for a long time.
Will it win any literary awards ? No. Is Jimmy critically acclaimed ? I guess not. Is it a rip-roaring tale whisking the reader all over the Caribbean following the warm & funny antics of "our hero" Tully Mars ? You bet !!! Buffett's writing is the closest thing you'll get to an adventure on the Mexican Riviera Maya without spending over a thousand pounds and even then you won't have as much fun as Tully does !!!
If you're bored of reading the same old books & fed up of watching politicians groan on tv about how they'd do things differently if they had a chance, get this book, switch off the tv and relax in Jimmy's sun-kissed, laid-back world. It's a much nicer place than a wet Monday night in Wales !!!
