5.0 out of 5 stars Very capable processor., 2 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Six-core Processor - 3.20 GHz, 9 MB Cache, Socket AM3, 125W, 45 nm, 3 Year Warranty, Retail Boxed (Personal Computers)
I've been thinking about upgrading from a duel core processor to a multi-core for some time. Now is a good time to buy this as prices have plummeted recently (because Bulldozer is round the corner?).

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA770-ES3 socket AM2+, so it's great I can use this CPU with just a BIOS update. AMD really do look after their customers with backwards compatibility. Performance is good as you would expect. I doubt I'll need all six cores, but then again maybe in the future parallel processing will become more prevalent. All six show activity when running a couple of virus and spyware scans in the background, which is good.

The stock heatsink and fan are ok for stock speeds, but get quite noisy under load (in common with all the AMD stock fans I've used), so I bought a Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 - Processor cooler - ( Socket 754, Socket 775, Socket 939, Socket 1156, Socket AM2+, Socket 1366, Socket AM3 ) - aluminium - 92 mm that is cooler and quieter.

I generally buy hardware that is about to be superceded by something new, resulting in very capable performance at a bargain price. This CPU fits this philosophy just fine and should be good for many years to come.

Edit: I have now overclocked this to 3.7 GHz with stock voltage, very impressive. Tried 3.8 but crashed with prime95 so 3.7 is fine as I don't want to mess about with volts.

CPC media benchmarks gave as follows: image editing 1091, video encoding 2232, multitasking 784, overall 1369.

Edit 2: now using it to process Rosetta@home distributed computing project, very fast using all cores at 100%. Temperature never exceeds 50C.
