How many more albums is Eric Gales going to have to put out before finally, the great blues listening public are going to sit up and notice him?
So here we are umpteen studio albums down the line and finally, Eric has decided to put out a live one. And a great addition to his catalogue it is too - positively smoking from the slow, reverb opening of THE OPEN ROAD through to the closing lines of RETRIBUTION, taking in the ZZ Topesque THE CHANGE IN ME and the Joe Satriani-esque instrumental of UNIVERSAL PEACEPIPE, Eric displays his powerful and fluid style - sometimes a la Hendrix whilst at other times running into smoky jazz club lines but always played with such feeling and power, never seemingly running out of ideas for licks!
So, all that taken into account - why is this guy still in a musical backwater? If you've never given the man any listening time, you can do far, far worse than giving LIVE a spin and then diving into his back catalogue and, if you are quick about it then you will be able to purchase this album with a bonus DVD showing just how unassuming this man is and indeed how capable his two backing musicians in Aaron Haggerty and Steve Evans are giving a classic trio line up where the sound seems to equal far more than the sum of it's parts.
Yes, I know that Eric's vocals aren't the strongest - but then many a blues axeman has managed with less of a tuneful vocal and managed success - but really, this man is all about his axe slinging capabilities which this album displays by the bucketload.
