Ambitious, Challenging but Rewarding,
This review is from: The Marlowe Papers (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)There are not many novels to have been written in verse form and that, I am afraid, will be enough to put people off from thinking about reading this. If a reader were to take that view, they would be missing out on a rewarding experience.
As a reader, you do have to work for it - but your efforts are rewarded but a well-constructed and engaging piece of literature.
I don't buy into the central conceit that Marlowe was, in fact, the author of the plays of Shakespeare but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the novel.
Ros Barber is to be commended for the ambition and craft needed to bring this project to fruition. Also credit to her publisher for having taken a risk on what could have been a very 'brave' decision.
It won't be to everyone's taste - but it is worth exploring. I am glad I did.
