Great Introduction to Greek Warriors,
This review is from: The Ancient Greeks (Elite) (Paperback)
This is would make a great addition to the library of anyone who collects Osprey titles, or just about anyone who's intrested in Ancient Greece.
Nick Sekunda provides the text, which is vivid and highly readable.
He presents a short look at the Hoplite Warfare of Classical Greece, but the main emphasis is on military costume of these elite soldiers.
The layout of this book is rather different than your typical Osprey fare. Instead of giving you an overview of the organisation and techniques of warfare as this series usually does; this book instead acts as a detailed description of the arms, armour, equipment and dress of the Hoplite warrior, as they evolved over the main periods of Greek history, from about 500 to 300 BC. The author explains these details by constantly referring to the colour plates, which are provided by Angus McBride.
The 12 colour plates are the obvious draw of the book, and they are among the best ever made by McBride; once the veteran artist of the Osprey series before his death in 2007. The book is worth the price just for these illustrations alone.
A highly recommended title for reenactors, history buffs and interested amateurs.
