Oodles of noodles,
This review is from: The Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology (Audio CD)
If you are a confirmed Satriani fan who (for some reason) needs a compliation then this is for you. It is a generous and well packed double disc. For that (and the undeniable technical brilliance of the playing) I will give three stars though it would be 2.5 if I could.
If you are new to Satriani and want to check him out then a fiver is hardly a big gamble. You may love it. You may find that you are not rushing to buy the back catalogue.
Years ago a friend gave me a "you must hear this" compilation tape. I listened to it a few times but was never grabbed. A few months ago I decided to give Satriani another go but I remain disinterested. There is not a single track that has stuck in my head; which I want to play again as soon as it has finished.
I have a large collection of music played by the likes of Iommi, Paige, Rosier, Young, Schenker, Blackmore, Rhodes and Clarkin. There is many a fine instrumental track amongst them but nothing in the Satriani Anthology ranks with them.
I cannot help feel that the term "noodling" fits too well. The tracks are often accompanied by an overly heavy drum kit which detracts from the guitar.
I will keep listening and may become a convert but it has not happened yet.
