June Anderson in "Norma",
This review is from: Bellini: Norma [DVD] (DVD)
June Anderson fans have had a long wait for her performance of Norma but the wait has been worth it.
Norma can be quite a static opera visually but what a potentially glorious feast vocally we have. June Anderson is one of the top dramatic coloratura sopranos of our day and i was concerned that maybe she had left it a bit too long to sing Norma, my fears were groundless. She started off with a perfectly placed recit and then moved onto a serene Casta Diva (in G not F) finishing the aria as written. We were treated to two verses of the cabaletta with a wonderfully decorated second verse. Her voice blended superbly with the mezzo of Daniella Barcelona. Although June is not the tigress that Callas was she took the part and made it her own. Compare this to Jane Eaglens recording and you'll hear the subtlety that June Anderson brings to the role that Jane Eaglen only seems to hint at.We have a Norma for the 21st Century who has a secure bel canto technique.
My only criticism of this recording is that at times the orchestra sounded a bit like a band at a fairground.
If you want a recording of Norma from a singer who is still alive and you may get to see perform it in person, then this is the one you need.

This is not a review of this DVD, which stars Joan Sutherland as Norma.
