5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best purchases I have ever made, 6 Nov. 2011

This review is from: Queer As Folk USA - Season 1-5 Complete [DVD] (DVD)
I was recommended to buy this series by several friends but put it off for ages because I thought it was all about sex and so wouldn't be my 'thing'. However, I made the decision to buy it and after watching the complete boxset twice in 3 weeks, can honestly say it was the best decision I've ever made. Although there is a lot of sex (and drugs, partying and good music!), the storylines are deep, involving and very quickly become based upon the relationships between the main characters rather than sex.

QAF covers love, heartache, marriage, parenthood, HIV, custody disputes, substance abuse and recovery, growing up, business struggles, cancer, extreme homophobia, coming 'out', gay bashing and so much more, and I was gripped from start to finish. I even somehow managed to watch the last 3 series in 2 days because I simply couldn't drag myself away. The actors all do a fantastic job of making the programme realistic and believable.

I'm a young, straight, British female but a TV series about gay men and lesbian women set in America is probably the most eye-opening, enlightening thing I've ever seen. I feel priveleged to have experienced the series and would encourage anyone to watch it.

The American version of Queer as folk to me had a lot of down sides but some improvements of the UK series. My main dislike was that the drama between the characters was just pushed far too far. Brian in particular and most of the others were so mean and disrespectful of each other that I just didn't feel any compassion or affinity for them at all. While the series is all about being gay it does show gay people as sex addicted, drug abusing, cigarette smoking, empty characters who just want to have sex. I am a proud gay man, but by the end of this series I didn't like most of the characters at all, and I don't think that someone who didn't like gays would change their minds by watching this TV series.
There needed to be more love and compassion to the characters, so you could relate to them in a positive way, but the producers and writers just ended up pushing the series towards just being a "soap opera", with unnecessary drama between the gay characters rather than with the hostile straight world. Good to see gay life on the screen, but this series was disappointing because it could have been so much better. Defiantly not worth 5 Stars.
