This review is from: Doctor Sleep: Shining Book 2 (The Shining) (Kindle Edition)
There were a couple of ropey reviews after this came out, so I was somewhat nervous to start it. Would it ruin one of the finest horror books of all time? Did it need revisiting?
I think the passage of time has allowed King to really find a new voice to breathe life in to Dan Torrance.
So that there is no misunderstanding, this is not really a horror book, certainly not in the sense that The Shining was. The Shining unnerved me (in a good way), this simply compelled me to read. There are elements of horror, but is more a study of the characters, the nature of "The Shining", and the forces at work around it.
An excellently crafted novel (as you would expect), with a thorough narrative. The echoes of the original were woven throughout, without weighing down on the sequel, allowing the new characters, and the older ones, free reign to forge a new path many years on from the destruction of The Overlook.
Simply a must read
