3.0 out of 5 stars Charming though Silly & Sentimental., 2 Aug 2012

This review is from: Father Dear Father - Film [DVD] (DVD)
Like several 70's sitcoms, this series doesn't lend itself comfortably into the transition to cinema film. The lead actors of Father (Patrick Cargill), Nanny (Noel Dyson) and ex-wife Barbara (Ursula Howells) put in comfortable performances whilst the two young daughters have only a limited input in their brief appearances. As far as this film version is concerned I feel they were there more for style than substance. It adheres well to the TV series using several of the already screened senarios but lacks the pace and punch of the short show format. This version is a no frills release, with no extras or accompanying notes. However, it does still represent good value for money for these reasons. Patrick Cargill was a marvelous character actor, equally at ease with comedy or straight roles. Also, for its part this show was actually ahead of its time. Single father raising 2 teenage daughters...examining the sexual revolution, gender stereotypes, adolescence, female equality and much more; virtually unheard of in the early 70s. If you're one for nostalgia, or have interest in seeing life in the change over period from the 60's to 70's then this is a film for you. If however, you want a really funny movie of star-studded, side-splitting humour then I'd give this one a miss. At times it is silly, full of sentimentality but it's charming all the same. Maybe the years have played tricks with my memory but I thought that the TV series was much funnier at the time than this film portrays.

Mr. Mungo says:
Bob, I think you're largely right but it was always a gentle, middle-class comedy, rather than On The Buses!
