A strange eclectic mix of music here, dripping with irony and bizarre instrumentation from Xylophones to electronica to Mariachi trumpets, this in no way could be described as easy listening. The lyrics are clever and allusive-read the list of track titles: if you like them, you'll like the lyrics.
Musically there are echoes of Nick Cave and Marc Almond in his Marc and the Mambas era, but there's a lightness of touch here which is very distinctive. It's definitely not folk, or rock, or Electro, or Hip-Hop, and the songs tend to the slow and moody (actually, Crash Test Dummies is not a bad reference point), so the chances of huge commercial success are exceedingly slim.
But if you want to be in on the ground floor of a potentially huge new cult artist, get this CD. It won't appeal immediately-it is definitely a grower which repays perseverance- but when you do grow to like it (and you will!) you may end up loving it more than any other release this year. Abandon all preconceptions and dive in!
