This review is from: For The Love Of Ada - Series 1 - Complete [DVD] (DVD)
Just as inimitable as Margaret Rutherford, but exemplifying a different kind of English eccentricity, was Irene Handl. After playing in scores of films, touring the world in a play, and writing two novels, she scored great success in this TV series of 1970-1971. Writers Vince Powell and Harry Driver created it, and it fitted her like a glove. "For the Love of Ada" ran for 27 episodes and a feature film, and I am welcoming this DVD comprising the first series of 6 episodes.
Widow Ada Cresswell and widower Walter Bingley regard themselves as "keeping company". Real and perceived differences hinder the move towards marriage. Ada has a disapproving daughter. Walter is from the north and Ada in from the south. Ada suspects Walter is "seeing other women". All these obstacles are overcome by the end of Series One.
The versatile Barbara Mitchell played Ada's daughter Ruth throughout the series. Seeming likely to mature into yet another player of elderly English eccentrics, Barbara Mitchell died from cancer a few years after this series finished.
