Unlike Anything You Will Ever Hear!,
This review is from: Loveless (Re-mastered By Kevin Shields) (2CD) (Audio CD)
The first reaction I had to putting Loveless on my stereo was extreme excitement! It was quite simply a privelige to have heard this "music" roaring out of my speakers! I think I was about sixteen years old and beginning to move away from the more traditional pop rock I was used to. I bought Loveless and it opened the door to something quite astonishing. Its almost got a heavy rock ambient sound. It is truly unlike anything you will have ever heard before. Listening to the album is an experience more than anything; greater than just listening to a record.
The album was recorded over a two year period for Creation records and is rumoured to have cost around £250,000, all but bankrupting Creation and destroying MBV head honcho Kevin Shields' relationship with Alan McGee. It is however, a testament to all that were involved in its concoction. Here is a piece of work that quite simply makes 95% of music made today sound dated and lacklustre.
A personal highlight for me is "Sometimes", a track of sheer beauty that always brings a tear to eye. The opening lines of "Close my eyes/Feel me now/I don't know how you could not love me now" never fails to stirsomething deep inside me. There is a little organ that breaks through the sonic wall of sound/noise a little into it which forme is one of the greatest moments in music. Check out its use in the film Lost In Translation.
Outstanding achievement of sonic brilliance.
