As good as the top-tier Hammer releases,

This review is from: Plague of the Zombies (Blu-ray + DVD) (Blu-ray)
Plague of the Zombies may not be one of the better-known Hammer movies and it may not have the top stars like Peter Cushing and/or Christopher Lee but this does not make it a lower-rung film in quality. Andre Morell who played Watson in the Terence Fisher directed Hound of The Baskervilles brings that same solidity to his leading turn in this film as a doctor determined to get to the root of a strange disease that leads to several unexplained deaths in a village...or are they deaths, really? People that chance upon this film because of the "Zombies" in the title may please note that unlike the Romero or Fulci movies this film does not have any explicit gore and is really more of an old-fashioned mystery for most part. It is well-paced and well-acted with some handsome looking production. The climax is a little rushed but I found it entertaining enough on the whole.
The video presentation on the blu-ray is quite good with strong colors and healthy layer of grain indicating minimal digital manipulation. There's a decent "making of" featurette with input from several members of the cast. If you like Hammer films, this one is a very worthy addition to your collection.
