Online, very underwhelming....,
This review is from: Resistance 3 (PS3) (Video Game)
This is basically a warning to those thinking of buying this game for its online features. If you are buying this off the back of Resistance 2 please be warned this is a very different game.
For a start to play online requires an online pass supplied with the game or purchased through the store if you pick this up second hand and the code is already used, this is the only way you can enter the online part of this game.
Gone is the 8 man coop mode that was so popular and still is. They have chosen to go back to the campaign coop mode which can be played by two players online or locally using split-screen. This is cool in its own right but subjectively not a patch on the 8 man experience.
The competitive section of this game is very underwhelming, gone is the 60 man TDM brawls, the biggest you get is 8 a side. There are other modes capture the flag etc etc. They appear to have have gone for the more intimate approach regarding online.
The game play is extremely jerky, its not smooth at all and struggles badly in close quarters combat.
The spawn points are a joke, you are constantly spawned at the back of the map having to run the whole map to reach the action, yes this was a problem in R2 so why not fix it.
The weapons choice is good but it takes an awful lot of bullets to stop people
Gone are those horrible wraiths which ruined the R2 online experience.
The maps are run of the mill, some are terrible to look at they simply ooze cheapness. This is down to a poor colour pallet. The environments seem washed out and it can be hard to spot the enemy.
If you discount the 2 coop trophies which can be achieved locally. There are no online trophies in this game. Subjectively this is a bad thing. I enjoy the challenge of online trophies they make the game last longer & generally are harder to achieve. I perversely enjoyed earning the Killing Machine trophy in R2 it made achieving platinum all the more special when it finally fell.
It has taken me just 3 days to Platinum the whole game. I have ran solo through the campaign twice, once on hard and once on Superhuman. The game poses very little challenge, everything is achieved far to easy. And with such a mediocre multiplayer offering the game represents pretty bad value for money for those looking for something more substantial. I wanted so much to love this game, but I have already gone back to R2 for my online fix.
