This is a great film. Built on a fantastic premise - an actor tired of endless criticism starts to bump off some of his most hated critics using murders taken from Shakespeare, the cast really ham it up and give it their all to make a highly enjoyable romp.
This is a great blend of comedy and horror. Vincent Price is great as the hammy actor, chewing up scenery and critics with equal ease. The critics are played by a host of fine actors and comedy talent, including Arthur Lowe as the henpecked husband (with Joan Hickson, later of Miss Marple fame as the domineering wife), Jack Hawkins, Robert Morely, Dennis Price, Michael Hordern, Harry Andrews and more. The hero of the show is Ian Hendry as the head critic. Eric Sykes and Milo O'Shea make effective, if unlikely, police officers, and Diana Rigg has fun as the daughter of the murderous actor.
One scene that really stands out is where Price gets to bump off Coral Brown, his real life wife. He sets about it with a certain degree of glee and gusto.
The murders are suitably gory, and nicely put together. And pulled off with great aplomb by all concerned.
A wonderfully entertaining film, I can't recommend it enough.
