5.0 out of 5 stars Re-release of a classic - a must-buy!, 26 May 2001
This review is from: 101 [VINYL] (Vinyl)
If you're fairly new to DM, perhaps you've just bought Exciter, after the Greatest Hits packages - this is where to go next. Recorded at the last night of a mega world tour - this was the 101st gig, hence the title - 101 catches Depeche Mode at their mind-boggling best. All the 80s classics are here along with a couple of gems only available on the old albums. Side 4 in particular will just blow you away. The album opens with Pimpf which is basically just there to make sure you're listening, then the big stuff comes in with all guns blazing. Behind The Wheel gets the crowd, and you, just in the right frame of mind for Strangelove and by the time the last chords of Something To Do fade away you, and the audience, are putty in Dave Gahan's hands. Blasphemous Rumours kicks off Side 2 with all it's truisms about life and religion making it THE song for angst-ridden studenty types. Stripped follows hot on it's heels mocking the culturally inept for wallowing in their materialism and then there's Somebody. If anyone knows of a love song ever written, or sang, more from the heart, give me a bell and I'll put you straight. The side closes with Black Celebration which is about as dark and deep as you could want to get. Sides 3 and 4 just don't stop coming at you. From Pleasure Little Treasure through to Everything Counts just turn up the bass and the volume and immerse yourself in the wall of sound, except for Question of Lust which is a great song (number 2 to Somebody in the love stakes) but is strangely out of place where it stands in the track listing. It's like an island of tranquility and melody amidst the harder and harder hitting beats that surround it. Imagine one episode of Countdown in the middle of a couple of hours of The Weakest Link. The last three tracks speak for themselves - a rousing finale where you, and the good people of Pasadena, get no time to take breath. Each one an anthem, each one glorious. If you can lay your hands on a copy of the video that goes with this, all the better. It seems a little strange that they're re-releasing the vinyl but nothing else to back it up, is the DVD in the pipeline? Or is it, perhaps, a club thing? Whatever, buy, listen and enjoy and if you want to thank me later the address is at the bottom. Cheers!
