This record, it can be said, takes some getting used to. Now I'm used to it, I find it a monumental, sincere and aspirational creation.
George Martin, better known for production work on some rather different material, is on record as having said this was his favourite ever production job; dealing with friendly, intelligent and brilliant musicians who had come together to create something new in a spirit of quiet integrity, including conductor Michael Tilson Thomas who I understand was felt to have taken his career close to the edge by involving himself with such unorthodox material - and I know of no other recording on which the music copyist appears in the band photo!
There is tremendous energy and verve on here, and however deeply unfashionable it may seem now to sing about spiritual aspiration, I think it fits very appropriately into this context. It is one of those few records of which it can really be said, that there was nothing like it before, and has been nothing since. A fine artefact.
