I read Fires in the Dark some time ago after my brother bought it for me, out of the blue, one Christmas. I really enjoyed the rambling tale of a Romany family during World War Two. So I was expecting a good literary novel from this accomplished writer and I wasn't disappointed. As others have said this novel grips you from the first sentence, and then the first chapters. As a reader you feel quite lost at the beginning not knowing really where this story is going. It unfolds neatly and excitingly. There's a great deal of sexual awakening and tension. There's mystery and unease. There are lies and misdeeds. Like others I agree that perhaps your sympathies do not lie with the protagonist - but should they? Perhaps they should lie with her family and that's the point of the novel - deception deserves no sympathy. This is a great read and extremely well written. Don't miss it.
