I first heard of Toploader back in 1998 when they were bottom of the bill at a Paul Weller gig in Victoria Park. As soon as I heard their songs that day, it was obvious that they were going to go far. In fact, they were probably the best band I saw that day.
The first Toploader releases were not too successful, and it took Dancing In The Moonlight to blast them to fame. When their first album Onka's Big Moka was released, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. The energy of their live shows weren't really captured and many of the album tracks were quite weak.
Not so with Magic Hotel. I was apprehensive about buying this CD after the 1st album, but I needn't have worried. Every track is fantastic and worthy of being a single. Toploader have matured and developed their own brand of rock that shows that they are no southern softies.
What a great feeling it is to hear British rock sound so invigorating. No weak acoustic ballads here - this is an album to lift your spirits!
The newest single, Time Of My Life is probably the standout track for me at the moment, but that's only because I know it so well. Cloud 9, Never Forgotten and The Midas Touch are also favourites. But really, there are no bad tracks on this album.
If you saw the band play at the Commonwealth Games, you'll know how good they can be. That's how I felt 4 years ago when I first saw them. Now there is an album to match that feeling.
Buy it today, you won't regret it!!!
