A Delightful addition to the Nintendo Family,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Nintendo Handheld Console 3DS XL - Silver/Black (Nintendo 3DS) (Console)
I've gotta say, this new iteration of the 3DS is nothing short of beautiful! I've been a Nintendo DS/DSL user for a long time now and didn't really care for the original 3DS. So why buy one now you might ask?
Firstly the design is more ergonomic/curvy and really fits your hands like a glove. The bigger screens really bring to life any game you are playing be it a 3DS cartridge or a DSL game. Sadly due to a bigger screen the speakers had to have a downsize/downgrade and aren't as loud as original 3DS. I really love the screens though! Such a step up from the NDS.
Secondly The hardware features such as the 3D slider have a lockdown postion now so no more accidental turning on of the 3D during use. Also the HOME,SELECT,START buttons are now easier to press/use. Lastly the stylus is positioned nicely to the right just like the NDS which I like. Left handers on the other hand might be livid. Also the battery life has now increased twofold! 3-6 hours 3DS games or 6-10 hours DS games which is crucial in a portable gaming device imo.
So why 4 out of 5 despite the glowing review. Well the device is now a tad heftier in weight due to the supersize treatment. As such it can get heavy to hold in place whilst gaming or watching video but especially when utilising the 3D. Also the weight might be bad for ppl with arthritis in the wrists. The sweetspot is now more lenient but any significant movement either by your hands or by your face means a blurring of the image and this is distressing for your eyes and may cause headaches in some ppl.
Also the exclusion of a second circle pad by Nintendo on a gaming device is a slight letdown. There is no excuse not to include one now that the real estate usable on the device has increased dramatically. Additionally I am livid at the exclusion of an AC Adapter! You have to buy one seperately if you want to continue using this device. Loses a star because of this.
So with all that the conclusion is that if you are still using a DS Phat or DS Lite like I was then there's no better time to upgrade (Dec 2012) Amazon have a £20 price drop from July 2012 PLUS Nintendo are giving away a free game until JAN 2013 so savings of around ~£50, Capital!!! Original 3DS users on the otherhand have a tougher choice. Do you want to spend more £££ for a bigger screen and longer battery life? Only you can decide, i'm just glad I waited this long for a semi decent deal.
