Worthless Men by Andrew Cowan for me was a good read though I have to say at times a very sad emotional read where we are told how through a day in 1916 in a small market town in England how the First World War was for very different people. But this was more than a book about war this for me was a look into how people lived through this horrible time in history.
Why I did like this book was the very haunting tone which was evident throughout the book as we seen the war through different characters in their own unique ways.
The book is actually based in an unnamed market town and at the beginning the changes of the town are shown when the war took all the healthy men from the town. Though for some of the residents they tried their best to keep life going as it was before the war started. My favourite was Walter who sees his family carrying on without him but why do they not notice him?
I liked this book mainly because of the writing, it for me was like the old fashioned tales we used to get but if you are looking a book filled with excitement I do believe in my own opinion this will not be the book for you. It is a book which will not please everyone but I do recommend to persevere through the first few chapters as they are slow but well worth the wait as it is truly a well written book filled with pure emotions which only could come from the First World War. It for me showed the true cost of war...
