This review is from: Back Beat: Singles From The Island Vaults 1962 (Audio CD)
An absolutely fascinating (and pretty darned good) 3 CD collection of early Island releases from the out of copyright folk at One Day Records, not least historically as these date from the period of Jamaica achieving independence, and the key recognition by Chris Blackwell that his label was selling more to the immigrant community in London than at home. There's even an early nod to the effects of climate change as Jimmy Cliff gives us "Hurricane Hattie'! As well as early stuff from Jimmy, Derrick Morgan, Alton Ellis (as Alton and Eddy [Perkins], there's a whole glorious galimaufry of Calypso, R&B, Twist and some amazing back-beat tinged Sam Cooke knock-offs! Awesome!
