3.0 out of 5 stars Not the easiest book to enjoy, 18 Feb. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Other Half Lives (Culver Valley Crime) (Hardcover)
I usually love Sophie Hannah and was excited to have this latest big fat book. However I found it really all too much of a puzzle and sadly difficult to get involved with. I just never cared for any of the characters and the plot seemed too clever by half, in fact it was almost insane. The idea of artists being so obsessively jealous and machiavellian didn't work for me and I felt excluded from the sub plot about the detective Charlie and her past. Too many people to get to know and nearly all of them absolutely ghastly with the most disturbing ideas of brutality. Not one I could recommend or want to pass on, for me it wasn't worth the effort of reading - or, being so heavy, holding!

I agree 100%. I had previously read Point of Rescue and liked that except funnily enough the last 50 pages but in general that book was believable. This was not and definitely not worth the effort.

I agree 100%. A disappointment. Bizarre plot which did not engage. I was feeling irritated at around the 180 page mark but persevered. Not worth the effort.

Thanks for the reassuring comment. I had wondered if there was something wrong about me. nice to have another's view. I have read everything by Sophie Hannah in the past. Her short stories are wonderful (the Fantastic Book of Everybody's Secrets). The Other Half Lives is perplexing and crazy - completely over the top - bonkers really. Too much to swallow! What a shame to waste so much time and money on this hardback. I hope she has a rest and gets back to her previous form.

Hi - I had exactly the same reaction to the book, so it was good to read your review. I was also puzzled, given how glued to the first 3 I've been. Thanks for posting your comments. Let's see what the next one brings! Joy

I haven't read the book (nor any other by this author) but I'm watching the TV version right now. It's pretty feeble, and your comments could apply to this too. It makes me wonder why anyone would want to invest so much money in a TV production based on a book that is so below-average; even Sophie Hannah aficionados don't seem to like it much!

This tv programme doesn't in any way resemble the book - the book I read is all about artists not piano players! Weird. I thought I didn't recognise it.
