Brilliance - no other way to describe it,
This review is from: The Simpsons - Season 2 [DVD] (DVD)
I can't really believe that you need to read a review to go out and buy this; but if you do, please trust me, and shell out.
By the second series of the Simpsons, the animation has improved from some of the rather jerky and amateur-looking first series stuff. This series also introduces a lot more characters and locks in the traits that we have all learnt to know and love - the boundless evil of Burns and the consistently astounding stupidity of Homer to name but two.
The optional commentary tracks for each episode aren't always particularly inspired - lots of "what happened to his hair in that frame" kind of stuff, anumator's talk - but there are also some genuine insights and interesting anecdotes about breaking into primetime US programming with an animated show, which was of course totally unheard of.
But this is not about extras, as good as they sometimes are - it's about the episodes themselves and characters who have written themselves into legend ("Just think, Smithers - all this time, all I needed was the blood of a young child!").
Best of all, each and every episode is consistently and compulsively re-watchable, time and time again. The gags are still funny on the third and fourth viewing - which should always been a prime criterion when looking to buy comedy on DVD.
