This review is from: Mary Anne (VMC) (Paperback)This is sadly not one of her best works. It all feels very two-dimensional, you don't get under the skin of any of these characters. It's like reading a script, depending on the actors to bring it all to life. Possibly if it had been written as straight biography it might have been more successful, as it is Du Maurier seems strangely detached from it all. It's difficult to work out what's supposed to be fiction and what is fact. Interesting to note that the date given as being Mary Anne Clark's death in the author's dedication, is some years before a time in the book that Mary Anne is allegedly still living.

I've read all your reviews and just wanted to say, thanks for all the great recommendations. I reckon I agreed with you about 90% of the time, but boy you are wide of the mark with Donna Tartt. All the same - Cheers Rich!
