This review is from: The Number One Classical Album 2006 (Audio CD)
Probably not a first choice for classical music purists, this should not be seen as a criticism. This is, self-evidently, a compilation - two CD's, 42 tracks, excellent value. Sound quality and production is first rate, and there is a solid selection of music and musicians offered in the package. Most of the performers featured here have done much to popularise classical music - in an age when popular music seems to be indulging and celebrating some suspiciously ordinary singers, you cannot complain about the quality of Carreras, Katherine Jenkins, Renee Fleming, Bryn Terfel, or the other singers featured on this offering. You get a chance to listen to comparative newcomers like violinist Nicola Benedetti alongside the more familiar Vanessa Mae. Maybe not for purists, but there are hours of pleasure and delight here, and given a chance to hear some of the performers you will doubtless be inspired to go buy their individual albums. An excellent sampler which will spend a lot of time on your CD player.
