This is a beast of an album. Opens straight away with the wailing guitars of "I'm Satisfied." As soon as the sound hits you, you know this album is going to be something special. And oh boy, it is.
Every song has both an acousticy and synthy feel, however every song manages to sound different and have it's own identity and sound different from the rest at the same time. I love his use of chords with both synth and guitar, they must be some sort of jazz chords or something, because they sound so new and so brilliant. Well mixed and well played instruments, with plenty of inventive thinking, making this album a winner.
I love matt's vocal's, they just fit so well with the vocals, completing the brilliant mixture of rock, acoustic and synths. His lyrics sound personal, rather than political, some with obvious meaning to the listener, and some not. Unsure whether his lyrics are inspired by his life, but he sure knows how it feels to be lonely.
On a downside, the intro's to the songs are often a little predictable, short and sweet, with a clever synth or a wailing guitar weaving within. Sometimes, they sound like other songs... "One Life" sounds very much to me like status quo, with the tinkling piano, repetitive, bouncy guitar riff and a wailing guitar, i expect matt to start singing "I'm the kinda guy who likes to roam around..."
With plenty of bass, plenty of face-melting guitar solo's, plenty of crazy piano improvisation and powerful synths... id say this album was a crazy mix of modern rock music and jazz. And it works wonderfully. I fully recommend.
