3.0 out of 5 stars Above average YA vampire adventure, 30 Oct. 2013
This review is from: The Last Human (Vampires Rule # 1) (Kindle Edition)
This is the first episode in an ongoing series, set in the future, when human civilisation has collapsed and Vampire (written like that throughout the book, with the capitalised V) society has come to the fore.

The story is told from the viewpoint of the 'last human' of the title; a young man who's been adopted and safeguarded by a powerful and ancient vamp. In a somewhat surreal set-up, he attends high school alongside dozens of Vampire youths (it's not explained whether they're immature; bred; aging etc, or why they'd need to go to school) who occasionally lapse into viewing him as a tasty lunchtime morsel - episodes of bloodlust and running and shouting swiftly follow, as the human lad falls back on his ultra-elite personal guard for protection.
There's an underlying mystery to this unusual supernatural scenario: feuding tribes of different types of Vampires; the rumour of humans living way out in the sun-scorched desert; weird creatures infiltrating Vampire society from the badlands. And then a new boy turns up at school - someone who may not be just another ordinary Vampire...

This didn't take too long to read and contained some unusual and interesting concepts. It suffers from the usual self-pub problems (poor grammar and punctuation, literal errors in the text, etc), and was maybe a little too YA / coming of age for my tastes.
The Last Human is also little more than an introduction, and not a complete story in itself. It sets up an intriguing scenario and establishes the major players, then leaves everything hanging for the next episode. It didn't grab me enough to want to read more, but I think would be more suitable for teenage readers.
6/10

To see how an experienced author presents an alternate history in which vampires rule the world, try Kim Newman's awesome, massively detailed and genuinely compelling Anno Dracula series; Anno Dracula (Anno Dracula 1)
