The Doctor and Mel, Evelyn and loose endings ...,

This review is from: Thicker Than Water (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
This audio story features the Sixth Doctor with his companion Mel. It also follows as a sequel to an earlier story, Arrangements for War, where the Doctor, travelling with Evelyn Smythe find themselves becoming involved when they don't want to, and having to stop interplanetary war on Villag. During that earlier story, Evelyn falls in love with Governor Rossiter, but leaves him to go with the Doctor. In this story, set a couple of years in the future, Evelyn has returned and married Rossiter. The Doctor and Mel decide to visit.
Evelyn has a tempestuous relationship with Rossiter's daughter Sophia, personally and politically, and the dissension amongst influential groups as to whether there should be research into the weaponry left behind by the Killoran invasion. The Doctor's visit turns deadly when Evelyn, Mel and many more are threatened.
This is a great story; just the right amount of intrigue and danger. The mystery is not too long left as a mystery, at least to the listener who has the advantage of hearing the interactions of all parties, whereas the Doctor is often working in isolation. But that does not detract from the storyline, and there are great sound effects, just enough to add to the action and the tension.
At the end there's a nice little twist with a visitor for Evelyn (which only really makes sense if you have lstened to the earlier stories with the Doctor and Evelyn in Project:Twilight and Project: Lazarus; if you haven't heard these stories, they are well worth getting). Leaves you with a little lump in your throught; great Doctor Who and great character-driven storytelling. Highly recommended.

Paul Sutton can write emotion & Feelings in his sleep & this audio a sequel to Arrangements For War delivers in spades, I especially enjoyed the uncredited Character which was a pleasant shock.

Definitely agree with you there. I like the relationship the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn have, they get on well and it rounds off some of the sharp edges of the SIxth Doctor character.
