3.0 out of 5 stars A Flawed Release, 7 Feb. 2005
This review is from: Then Play On (Audio CD)
While 'Then Play On' is a masterpiece, beware that this is not a straight reissue of the original UK release - 2 tracks are missing and 'Oh Well' has been grafted in to a revised running order, as was done on European & US releases at time of issue. However, it will have to do until WEA or an enlightened re-issue specialist decides to issue the album in its entirity - hopefully boosted by the 'Oh Well' and 'Green Manalishi' singles.
In the meantime, as other reviewers say, marvel in the talent on show - a band at their peak.

This 2005 review - and every other one pre-2013 attached to a cd release of Then Play On - does NOT relate to the 2013 product above, described as "Then Play On (Extended Edition) [Deluxe Edition]".

The 2013 reissue by Rhino does exactly as described in Mark Harris's review, ie include the original album with Danny Kirwan's excellent "dropped tracks" (which reached 4 by the other earlier release), and include the marvellous Oh Well & Green Manalishi singles.

Just what we've come to expect over the years from "an enlightened re-issue specialist" like Rhino! :0)

I wish Amazon would act on feedback from customers, about linking reviews from out-of-date versions to newly-released & often different (in content/quality) versions. It's misleading to prospective buyers.

This one will become my 4th version of what has perhaps always been my favourite of the blues-influenced Mac albums, so it's good to see that it's a comprehensive one, at last. Shame there weren't some out-takes/demos to build it up to a 2-cd set, as with the excellent Doors/Dominos/Who deluxe packs....but then that's an entirely different company.

There IS a cd release of demos from this era while making this album that was rlsd way back in 2001 on receiver records and is UTTERLY essential for fans of this line-up/era....two cd sets were put out called "showbiz blues/vaudeville years...if u don't have them scott buy em!

You'll need quite a lot of money to buy them now. Click "The Vaudeville Years: 1968-1970", "Vaudeville Years 1968" and "Showbiz Blues 1968 - 1970" for current prices on this site. I got them for a fiver each in eBay auctions a couple years ago. I have never seen them so cheap again.
Most of the "Then Play On" out-takes can be found on Sanctuary's "Men Of The World" 3 CD set. As far as I can tell, two tracks are missing. Out-takes of "World in Harmony" and "Show-Biz Blues" on "TVY" were followed by "alternative out-takes" on "S-BB". You only get one of each on "MotW".
It is however a great value purchase if you want to hear the full versions of "Madge" and "Underway", at seventeen and sixteen minutes plus, along with further jams and unreleased Kirwan material.
I got mine for just under four quid. Right now this site has a copy at a similar price. Happy buying.
