An insult to strategy gaming,
This review is from: Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (Mac/PC CD) (Video Game)
I'll start by saying i am a huge Age of Empires fan. Age of Empires 2 : The Conquerors is and has been my favourote strategy came since its release. That game is strategy. If you want to dig in and wall yourself in or hide in the woods you can. Any style of play is possible. The resources are well balanced and trade works wonderfully. I didn't like Age of Mythology as much. All the latest 3D strategy games seem to use their graphics as a selling point.
Warcraft 3, however, is an action game. Plain and simple. You build up as many units as possible and then kill some pixies to increase your heroes 'level'. Then you rush the enemy as soon as you can. All this is done using a mere using 2 resource types; trees and gold. I'm sure a 4 year old could do that.
Only 12 units are selectable at a time which is simple useless when comparable to age of empires' 40 units per group. This makes the management of units difficult at best.
The graphics are blocky and cartoony. The view even at 1024x768 is so far zoomed in i can see what the swordsmen have stuck in their teeth from the breakfast they had.
For me strategy is about taking time to make decisions and watching each unique strategy unfold over the course of the game. Playing Warcraft 3 is simply a case of working out a routine to make the most units in as little time as possible and rushing the enemy. Average game time is too short to call it a strategy game.
And to one of the worst points of all, the missions. I played them and i disliked them immensely, but then again warcraft 3 is mainly an online game so it wasn't its main selling point.
All-in-all i found this game to be dull and i still cannot comprehend how it has become such a massively popular online game. It seems that gamers no longer have the patience to play strategy games that involve proper strategy.
