Great potential but not there yet.,
This review is from: Dragon Gaming Speech Pack (DVD-ROM)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This consists of Dragon naturally speaking version 11 and a voucher that lets you download some software and also configure it so that three games can be controlled by speech. Additional vouchers have to be paid for.
It is a great idea in principal especially for gamers who don't have complete control of their hands.
I tested it out on world of warcraft. It works okay but there were a few issues. Even with the responsiveness turned up to the maximum there was a gap between issuing commands and the game character responding. For easy questing it worked okay but it is not useable for dungeons, raids and PvP. Some of the commands didn't work either.
From looking at their website, offline games seemed to work better and they are working on improving the software.
The Speech recognition software works really well. It does take a bit of effort and it does feel a bit strange at first but it does get better the more you use it.
I have used it quite a lot in word and it is genuinely useful. There is a slight delay between saying the words and them appearing on the screen but I soon got fairly used to that. I have never dictated before so again that felt a bit odd. The more you use it the better and more accurate it gets.
I did find it quite good fun to see the most inaccurate sentences I could construct and what it does with swear words. You can train it to recognise words.
Applications such as internet explorer can be opened and you can navigate round the screen, though for the internet it can be a bit laborious.
The headset microphone was of an acceptable standard. The premium edition needs to be purchased if you want to use it for excel or transcribing from voice recorders.
I don't have windows 7 so I can't compare it to the speech software that comes with that. For older versions of windows the speech software had been pretty rudimentary.
For Dragon home naturally speaking on its own I would give it four stars but at the moment the gaming element is somewhat lacking.
