"This is the perfect recipe for the roasting oven of an aga" (page 167) I think really says it all.
This book is firmly in `idyllic lifestyle' territory. Amongst the hand drawn sketches, photos of ornate table layouts and cosy ephemera, are elaborate menus for glorious event-style gatherings with friends. Although these are targeted at the home cook, the home cook would have to be someone with heroic amounts of enthusiasm, ability and time to even attempt these.
The events push the boundaries of possibilities beyond realistic. A Beach Barbeque - I live on a UK seafront, ALL fires are banned on the beach just as they are on all English beaches. Similarly comes Firepit Night... The author says just build it in a garden or field - not sure my neighbours, council or the Woodland Trust would agree. Holiday Weekend Away? No holiday for whoever was trying to re-create that menu.
It's a nice book, but has more value as a fantasy lifestyle read, or a personal cooking memoir, than a menu and recipe book.
