Touring the Verdun Battlefield,
This review is from: Verdun And The Battles For Its Possession An Illustrated Guide To The Battlefields 1914-1918. (Battle for Possession) (Paperback)
I will be visiting the Battlefield of Verdun next year May 2012, with a group of friends. This book is a reprint of the Illustrated Michelin Guide to the Battlefields (1914 - 1918). At the moment the book looks like excellent value with a brief account of the years 1870 up to 1914 as an introduction. It includes from page 10 to page 30. The German offensive in 1916 to the French - American offensive in 1918 and the battles in between. To be produced so early after the 14-18 war and in such detail is really remarkable. It is as it says an illustrated guide and much of the rest of the book shows the area and Verdun itself as it was before the war and the results in 1919. I will be attempting "A visit to the city of Verdun" on page 31 as I will the " Visit to the Battlefield" on page 57. I will be attempting to compare the visits in the book with what we will actually find. So will give an update next year. Next to this book I will be using Walking Verdun by Christana Holstein and the walking tours that she provides.
