5.0 out of 5 stars This is our film bible, 29 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Radio Times Guide to Films 2014 (Paperback)
We have had this and its previous incarnations and we just will not watch a film unless this guide gives it at least 3 stars.

The number of films that this booked has saved us from watching has given us time we could otherwise have never got back.

If you refuse to watch any film, unless one particular guidebook rates it at least 3 Stars, then you are missing out on hundreds, if not tens of thousands of amazing films! Don't let any one guidebook dictate to you what you should/should not view! It's blinkered, and makes you look like someone who has no mind of their own!

Thank you for your comment. However I have watched many films over my none too few years and I find the rating correlates to my experiences of watching them. Given limitless time I would love to sit through films good and bad however I don't and therefore I use this book as a guide to my viewing choice. I cannot name a 2* film which I am glad I have seen! So for me it works.

With all due respect, it's not about having "limitless time"! It's about trying films that interest you, not just trying stuff that someone else tells you to try, because they think it's the best film ever made!

Therein lies the difference! If you stick solely to anything (films, books, food, shops, restaurants) that someone else recommends, you are narrowing your own experiences. Likewise, not everyone has the same taste! And that is why it's so important to try stuff, because YOU want too, and not just because someone else has told you that you should try it!

I could recommend you try eating a bar of soap. I could say it's the best food in the world. But that doesn't make it so. And even if 10 other people also tell you that a bar of soap was also their favourite food stuff, that doesn't mean you should try it, unless you want to try it!

You must have a certain genre of film you love, or a favourite actor/director. Try watching something you wouldn't normally watch, and expand your entertainment horizons! You'll be amazed at how many amazing films exist out there in the world, that no one has heard of, let alone reviewed in a movie guide with 3-Stars (or higher), that deserve your attention. Some of the best films I've ever seen, are ones that others have dismissed!
