Good Rich Soil,
This review is from: Gone To Earth [DVD] (DVD)
This review is for the Korean import version. The picture quality is very good, although possibly the blacks are too black ( which is usually a good thing )and this film deserves a complete restoration. I thought this might be a difficult film to follow but instead I found a haunting tale with a captivating & touching heroine. One of the most visually gorgeous movies I've ever seen, Jennifer Jones is better served here playing the 'close to nature' earthy innocent than she was in the expensive 'Duel in the Sun'.
A film specific to time & place and the social & moral mores within, all this is expertly AND lovingly evoked. Having finally seen this I now consider it a masterpiece from the Powell & Pressburger stables. A beautiful music score, understated symbolism, stunning Technicolor cinematography (like a painting that moves) and one of cinemas most beautiful & expressive faces in Jennifer Jones.
Please note I am Biased towards Jennifer Jones AND Powell & Pressburger.
I have uploaded some images from the movie so you can judge for yourself as the dull packaging of the DVD really gives no hint at all.
