Good in Parts,
This review is from: Torchwood: Complete BBC Series 1 Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
The first series of Torchwood is like the preverbiable curates egg - Good in parts. Torchwood is allowed to go places where it's parent Dr Who could never go, and for the first series that is part of the problem. There are times especially in the first few episodes when the writing and production team seem like a group of kids who suddenly have freedom to do things they couldn't do before. Unfortunately these 'adult' elements simply seem more like the behaviour of a group of adolescents, using swearing and sex just because they can.
That's not to say the series is terrible because it's not, it's just a very mixed bag, some brilliant episodes, some pretty awful ones, some mediocre. Some of the worst episodes are in my opinion: Everything changes, Day One, Countricide, Combat, a lot of the time these episodes over use their 'adult' tag. Some of the better ones are: Ghost Machine, Cyberwoman, Small Worlds and Out of Time.
The main cast are all played well, however they don't gel and form the team that they do in later series.
Series 1 saw Torchwood finding it's feet. If you've only seen later series then series 1 isn't as well formed or slick as series 2 or 3 but it's still worth seeing.
