4.0 out of 5 stars The Jaxx need to know what to leave off an album., 4 Oct. 2003
This review is from: Kish Kash (Audio CD)
This album starts incredibly strong. The first three songs are unstoppable. After hearing those "Lucky Star", I was convinced this would top Rooty. "Supersonic" verged on annoying, but I was impressed with the novel "plastic + r&b + a train" style of the song.
Then comes JC.
I had an open mind toward "Plug It In". I figured that the Jaxx would be able to overcome having a member of N*Sync sing. Nope. JC is absolutely annoying, and the production work isn't nearly enough to draw attention away.
"Cish Cash" is the other track they should've left off the album. The lyrics are cheesy, and you can tell that Siouxsie knows this. It sounds like an even more annoying Peaches.
What comes later is the album's hidden gem, "Hot and Cold". The production isn't as dense as on the earlier tracks, but has a sequence of punchy sampled horns with a characteristically Jaxx vocalist. This spot of brilliance really helps break up the second half of the album, which otherwise ranges from pretty good to irritating.
After the mediocre "Living Room" comes the excellent closer, "Feels Like Home". Woozy drones, fluttering synths, distant horns, and other subtle touches drift underneath breathy vocals. It's the type of song that rewards close listening, and ends the album on a good note.
I made a copy of this album without JC or Siouxsie, and listen to it very often and enjoy it. It really is a shame that the Jaxx had to include those two tracks. I doubt the celebrity power of those two will help them sell more records, and it ruins the flow of an otherwise good album. This doesn't top Rooty, but it does include some killer songs.
