A good little webcam!,
This review is from: Creative 73VF061000004 Live Cam Socialize HD (Personal Computers)Webcams have come on a long way since the days of the bulky ball/big-base style. This Creative Live Cam Socialize HD is a nice small bit of kit: it sits nicely on top of a flat screen TV/monitor - probably on top of a laptop too - and is designed so it won't slip off; there is a decent amount of tilt available to adjust the webcam up and down; the webcam USB cable is of a decent length and it actually looks nice!
Video quality is top notch compared to anything I've tried before - well they do say it is HD! Audio quality is pretty good with the built-in microphone - there isn't a need for a separate headset, thankfully!
One feature I like is the intuitive white LED around the lens lights up to let you know the webcam is in use and goes off when it is not active - unlike other webcams with bright green LEDs, this is a glow which is not at all distracting. The software provided allows you to set a password which you will need to type in before the webcam can be activated in applications - a good privacy/security feature, I suppose.
I have tried the webcam with Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu) and it works flawlessly with both. I have only tried it with the Creative software - which is full of lots of features, settings and tweaks - and Skype. The webcam works great with Skype and I've had positive comments in terms of audio quality.
With this being a high-quality (HD) webcam, I am presuming you will need an internet connection with a decent speed/bandwidth, as higher quality video = bigger size to transmit - this is not an issue for me, although it may be for people experiencing jerky video and audio cutting out problems with the likes of Skype. The key issue is probably upload speed, which is very poor in the UK as a whole. Also for those with old PCs, your CPU may not be up to scratch to process the HD video (I think most PCs up to 5 years old will be able to cope though).
All in all a very good webcam: easy to use, full of features and not ridiculously expensive. Highly recommended.
